Sample Itineraries
If you have 1 day

Start your morning in Belém: head to the stately Jerónimos Monastery and the fascinating National Coach Museum (both free with your card), and snag a pastel de nata at the original Pastéis de Belém along the way. After lunch, hop on a tram and head uphill to the Pilar 7 Bridge Experience or the Lisboa Story Centre for a dose of history. End the day at Saint Jorge Castle for sunset over the city, then jump on Tram 28 through Alfama and enjoy a discounted dinner at one of the participating restaurants.

If you have 2–3 days

Add a Sintra day on your second morning. Your card covers the CP train from Rossio (40 min, free), and the fairy-tale Pena Palace is the kind of place you’ll be glad you didn’t skip. Use day three to slow down: snap up a Tagus river cruise, dive into a Fado night in Alfama, and swing by the Monument to the Discoveries, the National Pantheon or Ajuda Palace – all free with the card.

Pena Palace on the Sintra hilltop, a free day trip from Lisbon with the Lisboa Card.

Day trip

Sintra

Give Sintra a whole day. Hop on the train at Rossio and 40 minutes later you’ll be up in the misty hills, where the vivid yellow Pena Palace, the spiralling tunnels and initiation well of Quinta da Regaleira and the old Moorish ramparts of the Castelo dos Mouros are all waiting. Pena and Regaleira run on timed-entry tickets these days, so it’s worth booking your Sintra tickets before you go rather than sorting them out at the gate.

Cascais town beach with sunbathers and pastel buildings, a free day trip from Lisbon with the Lisboa Card.

Day trip

Cascais

Cascais is where Lisbon heads for the seaside. The Cais do Sodré line hugs the river the whole way out, dropping you in an old fishing town that turned into a resort without ever losing its harbour. Swim off the calm town beaches, watch the Atlantic crash through the Boca do Inferno (the Mouth of Hell, and it earns the name), or rent a bike and roll along the coast road to the wild dunes at Guincho. Just leave time for grilled fish down at the harbour before you catch the train back.
