How It Works

Getting Started

Pick up your Lisbon Card at one of several redemption points across the city: the airport, Praça do Comércio, or Palácio Foz. Once activated, your card is valid for 24, 48, or 72 hours depending on your ticket choice.

Download the Lisbon and Sintra audio guide apps before you set off. They work offline, so you won’t need to worry about data or Wi-Fi while you’re exploring.

For Pena Palace, hop on the train to Sintra (free with this Lisbon-Sintra package) and show your ticket at the Iron Gate entrance. The shuttle will take you up to the palace, and you’re free to explore at your own pace.

Visit Pena Palace

This fairytale palace looks like something out of a storybook. Bright yellows, deep reds, and intricate tiles cover the exterior, while inside you’ll wander through royal chambers, battlements, and decorative towers.

The Park of Pena spreads out around the palace with winding trails, exotic trees, and hidden pavilions. It’s easy to spend hours here just soaking in the views over Sintra and the Atlantic coastline.

Don’t skip the Chalet of the Countess of Edla, a rustic retreat tucked into the woods. It’s quieter than the main palace and gives you a glimpse into a more intimate side of royal life.

Use the Lisboa Card

With the Lisbon Card in hand, you can jump on any metro, bus, tram, or lift without thinking twice. Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower are must-sees, and both are included. You’ll also get into the Lisbon Story Center, the 25 de Abril Bridge Experience (with virtual reality), and the Sintra Myths & Legends Interactive Centre.

Some attractions offer skip-the-line entry, while others give you discounts on top of the free access. You can visit each attraction once, so plan your route to hit your top picks first.

Tip

Download the digital guide via QR code as soon as you pick up your card. It’ll help you map out your day and check which attractions have the best access times.

Reviews

Travelers praise the unlimited transport access across metros, trams, buses, and trains, finding it easy to use and excellent value when visiting multiple attractions. The free train to Sintra and skip-the-line entry at museums are frequently mentioned highlights, with many calculating significant savings compared to buying tickets separately. Airport pickup is generally smooth and efficient. However, the audio guides receive consistent complaints, with many reporting the apps won’t download. The card doesn’t include bus 434 to Sintra’s palaces, requiring an additional purchase. Some feel the card isn’t economical if only visiting 2-3 attractions, and skip-the-line access doesn’t apply everywhere.

Plan Your Visit

Pena Palace is in Sintra, about 30 km from Lisbon. Take the train from Rossio or Oriente station to Sintra. It’s a scenic 40-minute ride. From Sintra station, catch bus 434 to the palace entrance, or grab a taxi if you’re short on time.

Private vehicles aren’t allowed at the monument, so park in Sintra’s historic center or use one of the peripheral car parks.

Insider Tips

  • Activate Your Card Strategically: Your Lisbon Card starts counting down as soon as it’s activated, so plan your first day carefully. If you’re arriving late in the day, wait until the next morning to redeem it.
  • Visit Pena Palace Early: The palace gets packed by midday, especially in summer. Aim for the 9:00 AM opening to explore before the tour groups arrive.
  • Use Public Transport Wisely: The Lisbon Card covers all metro, tram, and bus rides, so don’t be shy about hopping on and off. Tram 28 is a tourist favorite, but it fills up fast. Board at an earlier stop to snag a seat.
  • Pack Light for Sintra: Large bags aren’t allowed in Pena Palace, and there’s no storage on-site. Bring a small daypack with water, sunscreen, and a light jacket. The hilltop can be breezy.
  • Check Attraction Hours: Not all Lisbon Card attractions are open every day. Some museums close on Mondays, so double-check before you plan your route.
