What You’ll Experience

The Freedom of Hop-on Hop-off

No other type of city tour allows more freedom than hop-on hop-off bus tours. Being able to get off for however long you want at each attraction and spend as much – or as little – time as you want at each one is a fantastic feature.

You’re free to pick and choose what attractions to explore more closely, and you can also grab lunch at a nearby cafe or check out nearby areas that pique your interest. You never need to feel rushed, though, because you can just hop on any of the buses running along the route every 30 minutes.

Since your ticket is valid for 24, 48, 72, or 96 hours from the time you board, you can even call it a day when your feet get tired and wait to hop on the bus again the next morning.

The Historic Belém District

Step into Portugal’s golden age of exploration in Belém, where maritime heroes like Vasco da Gama once set sail. Your bus glides past the magnificent Jerónimos Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage masterpiece of Manueline architecture that took a century to build. The intricate stone carvings tell the story of Portugal’s Age of Discovery.

The imposing Belém Tower rises from the Tagus riverbank like a fairy-tale fortress. This 16th-century defensive tower welcomed explorers home and now welcomes you to climb its narrow spiral staircases for river views. Don’t miss the Monument to the Discoveries, where 33 carved figures of explorers, navigators, and scholars stand ready to sail into history.

Tip: Get off at the Coach Museum stop to see the world’s largest collection of royal carriages, including the extravagant 18th-century coaches that carried Portuguese royalty.

Modern Parque das Nações

Experience Lisbon’s contemporary face at Parque das Nações, the former site of Expo ’98. The sleek Gare do Oriente train station, designed by Santiago Calatrava, looks like a giant white bird taking flight. This ultra-modern district showcases Portugal’s architectural ambition with the Vasco da Gama Tower and the massive Vasco da Gama Shopping Centre.

The Oceanarium is Europe’s second-largest aquarium, where you’ll walk through underwater tunnels surrounded by sharks, rays, and thousands of colorful fish. The central tank holds 5 million liters of water and recreates the open ocean environment.

Take the cable car along the waterfront for elevated views of the Tagus River and the iconic 25th of April Bridge, Lisbon’s version of San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge.

Fun fact: The Parque das Nações area was completely transformed from industrial wasteland to this modern marvel in just four years for the 1998 World Exposition.

Did You Know? Facts

  1. Lisbon has one of the world’s longest bridges. From the bus you’ll spot the Vasco da Gama Bridge, stretching over 10 miles across the Tagus River.
  2. Lisbon’s Belem Tower once sat in the middle of the river. Over centuries, the river shifted, leaving this 16th-century fortress on the bank instead of on water.
  3. Avenida da Liberdade was inspired by Paris. The grand boulevard, now lined with luxury shops and theaters, was modeled after the Champs-Elysees.
